With a number of striking architectural features, the MBA award-winning EDSACC Grandstand project was skilfully brought together through a collaboration between North, The Entrance Leagues Club and EJE Architects as lead consultant.

The construction of the new grandstand for The Entrance & Bateau Bay Communities involved concrete and steel structural components with architectural elements. The project had several stakeholders including the design team, The Entrance Leagues Club who procured funding for the project and will operate the premises, State Government who provided funding, Central Coast Council who own the property as well as the local community and sporting groups that will gain benefit from the use of the facility. Coordinating between many stakeholders always holds significant challenges.

Being in close proximity to the ocean led to a few challenges in the materials used to avoid corrosion. The steel structure is coated in Micaceous Iron Oxide that had to be protected from damage during construction and the lightweight structure (purlins and soffit framing) were aluminium sections making site modifications difficult, putting a greater importance on accuracy on site.

The stepped seating section of the stand was designed as seven stairs (350mm rise each) 50m long, poured in situ. This created some significant challenges for the concrete trade. These were overcome by the team working in conjunction with the architect (EJE Architecture) and engineer (Michael Fitzgerald) to redesign the structure and pour each step individually. The end result is a clean finish on the seating area to the highest standards.
