No 2 Sportsground – Newcastle

Client: Newcastle City Council

VAlue: $5,500,000

Architect: EJE Architecture

Project Details

The redevelopment of the No 2 Sportsground was won through an open tender process managed by Newcastle City Council. By redeveloping the Sportsground, it provides the local rugby community with a modern facility within the Newcastle area.

The works included the removal of the existing grandstand, piling, construction of a new building, tiered seating, field lighting, stormwater drainage and the fit-out of the new bar for the Wanderers Rugby Club and the office space for the Newcastle and Hunter Rugby Union Club.

Confirming the partnering approach of North Construction, the project was completed whilst Newcastle City Council constructed the carpark and the playing surface. With the client having multiple contractors onsite at the same time, a coordinated effort to work in with the client and their subcontractors was required whilst still maintaining programme. As the Sportsground is a public building, the construction is of mostly solid materials and hard surfaces for durability. This required close coordination and supervision to ensure that the building was built in accordance with the documents. The achieved level of finish and collaborative approach taken to deliver the project successfully has received much positive feedback from both the architect and Newcastle City Council.
