The Paediatric Oncology Day Unit, constructed within the John Hunter Children’s Hospital, was funded solely by fund raising efforts and community donations.
An existing ward within the hospital was stripped back to a concrete shell, providing numerous challenges relating to dust and disease control. Steel framed partitions were installed to provide a number of specific rooms for the treatment of patients. The new rooms were fitted out with wall mounted medical equipment, high lux light fittings, hand washing facilities, and extensive use of wall and floor vinyl.
The ward was completed within a tight construction programme of 17 weeks, including two weeks for the Christmas shutdown. Throughout the duration of the project, Norths maintained efficient control of materials handling and rubbish removal with respect to the hospitals unusual operating hours.
A high level of quality was achieved across all aspects of the project, with the stringent criteria of the Disease Control Guidelines adhered to at all times.
