Opal Hillside Aged Care is a 120 suite retirement home built on the site of an existing facility at Mt Hutton.
Hillside is North’s second Opal Project which was awarded off the success of the first, and builds on our long history in the construction of Aged Care developments.
Built on a sloping site, the building is spread over four levels on suspended concrete slabs which incorporate large expansion joints to accommodate ground movement associated with mine subsidence in the area. The lower two stories are constructed of a dark brick veneer, while the upper two levels have an architectural colorbond façade and prominent contrasting sunshades in earthy overtones which blend in with the surrounding gum trees and surrounding bushland.
The building includes commercial grade kitchens and laundries, as well as a hair salon, café, and 8 communal lounge/sitting areas to provide a comfortable living environment for up to 120 residents who will also enjoy individual ensuites and accessible paths of travel throughout the facility.
dwp was engaged by Opal Aged Care for the design of the Opal Hillside Residential Aged Care Facility, Mount Hutton. Opal Aged Care elected to deliver this project under an Early Contractor Involvement (ECI) agreement with North Construction & Building appointed as the ECI partner. dwp worked with North through design development of the 120-Bed $24.7m RACF. The project was over budget, and dwp was involved in a detailed value engineering session facilitated by North. The design team worked together to achieve the target budget and was then
novated to North for the construction of the Newcastle Master Builders Association and Australian Institute of Architect’s award-winning building. dwp can highly recommend North as a builder with high standards for quality, budget, safety and programme. The North team at Opal Hillside dealt with challenging site constraints and delivered an excellent product for the client. We look forward to working with them again in the near future.
