Ausgrid Substation Kooragang Island – Air Conditioning Upgrade

Client: Ausgrid

VAlue: $900,000

Project Details

This project involved the installation of a full mechanical ventilation system into the existing Ausgrid power substation at Kooragang Island, Newcastle. The substation experiences a high heat load from the large amount of electrical equipment within the facility and excessive heat can reduce the efficiency of the substation. Further, the substation is in close proximity to the nearby Kooragang Island coal processing facilities and filtration was needed to the building (through the newly installed mechanical system) to prevent the fine coal dust entering into the substation. The project faced the challenge of working in a high risk environment, with live power and equipment being present throughout the works. Specialist training from Ausgrid is required to enter live substations and managing the program whilst adhering to the WHS requirements is a unique challenge to this type of project.
